I tasted this wonderful bottling from Ross Estate immediately after the 2001 Elderton Command Shiraz and became an instant fan of the 2001 vintage in Oz... I am not a fan of overripe, massive wines (regardless of where they're made) and Australian winemakers seem especially fond of the bigger-is-better style of winemaking. Both of these 2001s are restrained and show excellent balance. They retain the full fruit-forward style that makes Oz Shiraz distinctive, but also manage to pull off some of the nuance and leathery characteristics that are typically associated with older Bordeaux. This is a fantastic wine, and an amazing value. $40; 94 points
