In every tasting there's a bottle that usually just jumps way out in front of the others, and tonight it was this one courtesy of Mr. Eric Porres, who flew in from NYC for the tasting at Casa McLernon in Aptos, CA.
This was the only Italian entry -- the wine from Bartolo Mascarello showed magnificently -- displaying red and black fruit (like great Burgundies do), a super-smooth profile with little tannic backbone, and a nuanced and smooth mouthfeel and finish. It is drinking at seemingly peak maturity now, but it is likely on a plateau that will last another decade or so...
$225 (1.5L); 95 points
Bottom Line: Extraordinary in its fruit expression, lean structure, and perfect balance.
