Pesquera is a high-quality producer in the Ribera del Duero that has been getting some big-time attention (i.e. Robert Parker gave this wine 98 points...). Only 400 cases of it was produced in 1994 (and '94 was an excellent year in the region).
Rich Johnson, who always brings big contenders to our tastings in San Francisco, brought this beauty from his home cellar across the continent to Manhattan for Dave Morgan's tasting (the West Coast connection is pictured here, L-R: TK from Tokyo, wannabe San Franciscan Eric Porres, Scot McLernon representing Aptos/Santa Cruz, Norm Page representing Ross/Marin County, Steven Comfort representing San Francisco, and Rich representing the East Bay.
The wine is as impressive as a 10-year Bordeaux from a classified growth producer, showing an artful mixture of blackberry, black raspberry, rhubarb, leather & spice. Not super concentrated, this is a style that I really: enjoy, look for as a consumer, and appreciate & aspire to as a winemaker...
$80; 92 points
Bottom Line: An excellent wine that's fun to taste because it's made in such small production, but a questionable value -- I'd like to taste one that hadn't just been flown across the country the day before...
